The unit that I designed is an alternative government curriculum for students in the Learning Center.  The unit is based on South Dakota Social Studies Standards, Special Education Functional Standards, and Beresford High School's Government course guidelines.  The purpose of the unit to involve students examining the principals of government, equality, individual rights, the purpose of government, and the consent of the governed. They will revisit historical background for these ideas, identifying key historical events, documents, and contributors that are relative to each.  They will examine the US Constitution and identify specific ways in which these principals were incorporated as our government was being created. Finally the students examine the amendments to the Constitution and how they relate to them as individuals and part of the common good.
